Mahendra Chaudhary Zoological Park
Mahendra Chaudhary zoological park now known as Chhatbir Zoo is a park situated near Zirakpur. This zoological park was built in the 1970s and is now home of varieties of animals and birds. The zoo was introduced by the governor of Punjab Mahendra Mohan Chaudhary, in 1977 and then afterward, it was named after him.
Earlier a small number of animals were transported from Guwahati Zoo, Assam. This park covering an area of 505 acres, is one the largest zoological park in northern India, situated on the banks of the river ‘Ghaggar’. Chhatbir zoo offers a large variety of animals and birds including leopards, Royal Bengal Tigers, jackals, barking deer, etc., and birds from Black Swan, Cranes, Peacocks, Common ostrich, Emu, Indian peafowl, and Java sparrow.
